Acoustic Telemetry Measurements of Survival and Movements of Adult Steelhead within the Skeena and Bulkley Rivers, 2008
Several recommendations made to BC’s Ministry of Environment by the Skeena Independent Science Review Panel emphasized the need to initiate large-scale tagging operations for steelhead assessment purposes. These acoustic telemetry studies gathered background information that can be used to design an assessment program and help to determine steelhead migration rates in the tidal approach waters to the Skeena. Migration rate estimates can be compared to those based on the DNA analysis of bio-samples collected at Tyee and at the Moricetown First Nations fishing site. This project also assessed steelhead movement patterns at Moricetown to help calibrate mark-recapture estimates and provide greater confidence in the annual abundance estimate produced at that site.
