Slamgeesh Lake Smolt Sampling
Sockeye returns to Slamgeesh Lake are thought to have dropped below sustainable levels making the collection of stock status data (via smolt enumeration) critically important. This project continued the collection of smolt outmigration data at Slamgeesh Lake and produced an estimate of their population size and productivity. Sockeye smolt production in 2010 was found to be relatively high for Slamgeesh, and also as compared to typical productivity for British Columbia in general. This result suggests that the recent serious population declines have been caused by poor marine survival and/or excessive fishing pressure.
